Social media(#Twitter, #Facebook, #Instagram, #YouTube) has given power to common person to publish anything he wants that can be accessed worldwide. This is as really powerful tool. It has done good to mankind. Corrupt Government officials were caught red handed and got punished. Governments now can not easily control the news that is against them. Social media helps people come closer. They can make and grow online community worldwide. Like minded people with common goals can get help from each other. People have stated living virtual life where they publish their contents in the forms of photos, texts and videos.
But lets take a step back and think why social media was created. Who is getting benefited. With such a huge arrangement there must be someone making money. And when money and profit is involved sometimes #ethics, #morality and #legality is ignored. This is even more true for online virtual world.
Social media money circulation is based on advertisements. You as user become a target for advertisers in a very niche way once you start sharing your photos, start liking and sharing posts & start checking-in into venues.
Social media companies get to show more advertisements on their viral (popular) sections of channel and make more money. Since social media content is all user created and Social media companies depend heavily on popularity of content they also share some percentage of money generated to their users. This is called monetization of user's channel. It can be Facebook page, a blog, a YouTube Channel or a twitter handle.
To get more profits users try to make their content viral. Heard of #icebucketchallenge or #kikichallenge?
What good is it doing to human kind except generating advertisement money for these users.
I have seen YouTube channels who have already declared #USA-China wars, #India- China wars, 3rd world wars, etc.
News stay in social media based on their #virality factor and not their importance in #life. How many times have you seen authentic twitter trends on people dying of hunger in Africa? enough news about Poor condition of farmers in some parts of India.
One of my Danish friend, Thomas Bendt has rightly explained about popularity of fake viral news on social media. He says "main stream media like News channels and print media is responsible for this. If they are not biased in every part of world then situation should have been different."
I am not advocating to stop using social media but its users have to become more responsible and responsive. There are dislikes and report the post buttons in every social media. You can counter fake/useless virality by making is unpopular and that will compel social media channels and its money earning users to act accordingly.
